Bonsai and Quarantine

Bonsai and Quarantine

June 1, 2020

I started my bonsai practice a few years ago when I was looking to find ways to slow my mind and body. The art of bonsai presents the antithesis to modern life, there is no immediate gratification; It is a life-long practice intended to cultivate a single plant into an object of contemplation. Never having been a green-thumb or particularly patient, the challenge made it more intriguing and before long I was completely absorbed. For the last two years I've attended workshops with masters, kept my plants alive and was feeling great pride in calling myself an advanced beginner. However, it wasn't until the Covid imposed quarantine that I truly learned the power of this practice. What initially felt like forced isolation quickly became an essential retreat.

Seeing behind walls

Seeing behind walls

January 9, 2020

A number of months ago, I had the privilege of visiting student inmates at Lancaster State Prison with Cal State LA's Prison BA program (after meeting the founder at Hauser and Wirth's Lit Lit event). That day, I had the chance to see and hear the transformative power of education and art for the student inmates, many serving life without parole. Though these inmates had lost their freedom in society, receiving the opportunity of an education allowed them to learn how to communicate. The skill of communication, in turn, allowed them to manifest freedom of thought and expression, empowering their minds and giving them hope. Having the opportunity to see behind these walls and meet some of the most articulate and self-aware individuals proved to be another powerful reminder that in order to really see people, we must be willing to listen and learn.

capetown society for the blind

My studio work is not only an expression of my study of visual consciousness, it's an opportunity to create awareness about visual impairment and blindness. In 2019 I traveled to South Africa to learn about one of the few organizations in the world that provides innovative training, education and development programs for the visually impaired, they employ their graduates into small business units in the craft sector ensuring accessible, sustainable employment opportunities while enhancing quality of life. I could not be more inspired by the organization, it's students and it's talented craftspeople. We are looking forward to introducing a collaboration of limited edition pieces soon... stay tuned!

The Making of "Qualia, Into the Void"

The Making of "Qualia, Into the Void"

February 20, 2018

While I was exhibiting at the London Design Fair, I was approached by British visual artist, Alexander James to work on a collaboration. After meeting Alexander and learning that his practice spans not only diverse media but heavily focuses on materiality, I knew he was the right fit for my upcoming film project, Into the Void. Several months later, I invited Alexander to LA to join me on a road trip to the White Sands National Park in New Mexico. What transpired, was an incredible collaboration of visual storytelling that manifested my own journey through darkness.
